Vw beetle coolant light flashing red3/28/2024 ![]() ![]() As noted the harbor freight kit, comes with the vw adapter and you do not, need to buy a extra one. Yeah, the adapter, is similar to the coolant bottle cap but you can connect the pressure tester, to it. That is just one of many pressure test kits, that are on the market these days but it has the adapter, is priced ok and will work! There are a lot of other brand to choose from just make sure, they have the VW specific adapter, included in the kit. Pittsburgh® Automotive - Item#63862 (be sure to use the online 20% off coupon) Just as an example a professional VW adapter, can cost more then $50, so this kit is a bargain!Īdapter alone example without the rest of the needed kit! Confirmation of your repairs is great and will cut down on "do overs", DONE! Move on to the next thing. These pressure test kits can ALSO, be a great way to check for leaks AFTER, you do the cooling system repairs, that way you can CONFIRM and be fully confident, your system is leak free, airtight and you don't have to worry about it, anymore! I love that I hate wondering, if I have any other leaks or if the system, is going to leak soon, after the repairs have been done. I recommend, investing in a kit like this they have adapters for most cars on the road today, including our unique/specific one, for our Volkswagens. I got mine from Harbor Freight and pressure testing my system after a number of "cycles", I FINALLY found, a small leak, that had been eluding me for a long time. Over the years, I struggled with finding hard to find, pesky leaks and so, I finally, invested in a cooling system pressure test kit. Another good thing about the stock vw spec coolant is when you have a leak, "Pink Crusties", will show up, where the leak is and it is normally, pretty obvious, to see these, when a leak occurs. Because of this they are failure prone, while the leaks can come from ANYWHERE, the most common leaks are from the cooling flange, that comes off the head and you will typically, see pools of coolant, on top of your transmission. ![]() These VW's have a TON of plastic parts in the cooling system where in the past, these parts were made out of metal. Now, the fact, that your levels were low and you have a "burning smell", is typically a classic sign of a coolant leak. Typically when I service may cooling system the levels, end up a little above the "full" mark and have no negative effects from this. The main benefit of the marks for me is to be able to refer to them and see if the levels have changed, since the last time I checked. I find when the levels are "near" or above the top mark to not really be a major issue or problem. You can use the G13 from the dealer and it should be diluted to 50% concentration before adding. So to answer your questions, no need to drain the coolant. You would probably need to add close to a quart of straight coolant to do that, though. If you add straight coolant you will be increasing the concentration and if you added enough you could get above the 70% maximum concentration. The coolant you add should be diluted 50/50 with distilled water. This link has a compatibility chart that shows that G12++ or G13 are compatible with all the previous coolants: It is the latest version of G12 before VW went to G13. You may also find "Pentofrost ++" which can be used as well. It is also available in some auto parts stores as "Pentofrost E". It is backwards compatible with the G12 coolant that you should have now, so it can be added to top up with. The G13 coolant is a new, environmentally-friendly version of the VW coolant. In the manual, it states "Under no circumstances may G12 A8Dīe mixed with other coolant additives (for example G 11). Is this the right coolant? The dealer says this is theĬoolant that's used for all VW vehicles, it's a red color. ![]() Is (without the distilled water) in the coolant expansionĢ. Is it still possible to top up the coolant by pouring it as The dealer also said there was no need for mixing the coolant, what they sell is pre-mixed, but on the back of the container the instructions state "Use 50/50, maximum 70/30 coolant to distilled water mix"Īlso "Fill system with distilled water. G 013A8J1G and says Aluminum compatible Ethylene glycol. The one they are selling at VW is Part No. I asked VW to do a coolant flush, they advised against it and told me to top it off by adding more coolant. The coolant light started flashing red, then beeping, then keeps flashing red. ![]()
